The Mineola Portuguese qualified for the Dr. Manning Cup finals, defeating last year’s finalists, Central Park Rangers, 2-0, at Randall’s Island this past Sunday.
Behind goals from Shane Arikian and Frank Spanos, the Portuguese eliminated the team that knocked them out in last year’s semifinals.
The Portuguese will take on the NY Pancyprian-Freedoms in Yonkers, N.Y. on June 12 (Portuguese Independence Day weekend) for the championship in the Eastern New York State Amateur Soccer Association competition.
Mineola last won the Manning Cup back in 1981.
Also on Sunday, the Portuguese reserves defeated New York Irish Rovers in the Livio D’Arpino Cup semifinals. Mineola prevailed, 4-3 in penalty kicks, after playing to a 1-1 draw at New York Institute of Technology.
Portuguese general manager Gabriel Marques cited the team’s new national sponsorship with PowerBar as one of the contributing factors to the team’s success.
“This new partnership with PowerBar has given Mineola the ability to push the envelope even farther, knowing that we have such strong companies supporting local youth and amateur soccer on Long Island,†he said.
The club, which fields two Division 1 teams in the Long Island Junior Soccer League, has won 30 of 35 games this season and has scored 110 goals.
